Being A Model Mover

Moving? 5 Tips For What You Use Until The Last Minute

When packing up their home for a big move, many people focus on starting early and getting ahead of the game. But everyone will have some items which cannot be packed until the last moment. In general, these are things you'll need to use up until the day of and items that are perishable or fragile.

What can you do to make these easier to pack up no matter how long they must wait? Here are a few key tips.

1. Know What to Toss. Be prepared to toss some items that you hold out due to daily use. For example, you need toiletries and bathroom supplies right up until the day of. But if you leave out less important, half-full, or trial-size items, you can simply toss these out rather than worry about packing them.

2. Use Suitcases. Suitcases and travel gear are perfect for your last-minute items. After all, you'll be going on a trip — just one with a return to a new home instead of your old one — so treat travel goods like packing for an overnight or multi-day trip. Suitcases make packing more familiar and manageable. As an added bonus, they won't be mistaken for boxes that need to go on the moving truck.

3. Hire Professionals. If you have many things which need to be held out for last-minute packing, plan to use the professionals. Movers can help you with the final packing tasks on the day of the move, making short work of it. Be sure you discuss in advance how much you'll need them to pack up and prepare so that they can properly price and schedule it.

4. Repurpose Linens. Linens and clothing are some of the most commonly held-back packing items. Use these as packing material and padding for the other things you held out for the final day. This saves space and effort, making the work go faster on moving day.

5. Prepare Supplies. Don't run out of packing supplies before you run out of stuff to pack. Hold back a few boxes, a roll of tape, some packing material, and labels specifically for the last day. Label the boxes in advance and make them ready to be filled.
